Early Computer Gaming - How Did it Start?

Posted on Oct 23, 2008 under Game History | No Comment

Have you ever wondered when computer games were created, how about why they started, that might be an interesting topic to discuss here today? Well, why don’t we seriously explore this concept for a moment and look into the reality behind the first computer games and why they took hold and grew so rapidly into a 100 billion dollar industry over the years?

Obviously humans have played games for thousands of years. It was the Persian Empire that brought us the game of chess. The Chinese had a different version of a similar game. There have always been such games that people have enjoyed playing to pass the time. Perhaps it is these games that helped the human brain evolve to strategize and think of the future and to anticipate what was to come.

These games probably helped humans develop the skills needed to survive, to plan for winter and to plant crops; to build dams habitats. Mankind’s fascination with playing games really should not surprise any of us. And when computers were first built the first computer games were very simple, games like pong were simple enough.

One of the first artificially intelligent computer programs perhaps was the one invented to play Tic Tac Toe with humans. Eventually we have converted all of our games into electronic forms and they have into evolved into terrific masterpieces of art and video.

Experience A Casino Atmosphere In Your Home

Posted on Oct 23, 2008 under Online Games | No Comment

Roulette has been one of the most popular casino games, as playing this game, with simple rules, is fun. In case of live dealer roulette, players require guessing where the ball will eventually land on the roulette wheel after every spin. For betting, you can choose the pocket’s number, color or even the wheel’s section where the ball might eventually end up after the spin. Again, there are combination bets, streets, corners, columns and list goes on (depending upon the casino in consideration).

Playing live dealer roulette in a live dealer casino can get you close to a live casino atmosphere from your home. On your computer, you can see both Roulette wheel & croupier on a real time basis. This helps you in actually seeing the roulette ball rolling around the wheel, prior to falling into the pocket. Unlike other virtual games, where sometimes random generators are also used, live dealer roulette can be tagged as the real deal.

Both live dealer roulette and its ordinary version have similar rules for playing. You need to first click on the chip that you desire to bet. Every chip has a distinct worth. After choosing the chip, you can place it on the area, where your want to bet on. Prior to the croupier spinning the ball, announcement for ‘No more bets’ is made and players are then prevented from betting further. Now, the ball is sent spinning around the roulette wheel in a direction opposite to its rotation. The ball eventually looses speed and after bouncing a bit, it lands in a particular pocket. Players, who correctly guess the pocket, get paid according to the odds decided before the game.

The only difference between the two versions is that the live dealer roulette comes with several lucrative live casino bonuses, which are impossible to resist (apart from the fact that you are playing in the comfort of your own home and enjoying a casino environment).

Start playing the live dealer roulette on the web from tonight and see if lady luck is in your side or not, before trying your hand in a live casino!

Playstation 3 “Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution”
By Camilla Bertelsen

One of the finest game strategy games on PC s are produced by Sid Meier. They make one of the most engaging civilization simulation video games around. Popular titles like Railroad Tycoon and Civilization have always continue to deliver the most heralded game play. Thus it no surprise that the company move their popular titles from the PCs genre toward PlayStation 3 platform. And a good job they did, 2K and Firaxis together manage to translate that PC experience successfully towards the Playstation 3 Platform.

In Sid Meier Civilization revolution game play, the idea is to take a civilization in the stone ages and through strategic planning built it up to the Space Age. When you choose which civilization will be your base, the leader of that civilization also have added bonus for your game play. For example if you chose Cleopatra, you might get additional interest on gold reserves, at the medieval age, population growth is increased by two additional percentages. There five difficulties level in this game. Use the first level as a guide. As you get more proficient, try the more difficulty level.

To play this video game, you can choose multiplayer mode using LAN or Single player mode. For those who had played this game under PCs, you will know the game can take several weeks to complete. But under Playstation 3, it doesn’t last as long but not in the least as unsatisfying. In the Playstation 3 version. Micro managing of the game has also been removed. The graphics are good, bright, colorful and engaging with animation to the characters. The sound track are satisfying as well. Overall the transition form PCs based to the Next Gen game console like the Playstation 3 is well executed.

The History of Video Game Cheats

Posted on Oct 20, 2008 under Games Cheat, Video Games | No Comment

Not long ago, gamers had to look to the likes of Nintendo Power and GamePro to find codes to help them beat games that would otherwise be impossible. Who can forget the ubiquitous Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, B, A, start to dominate with 30 extra lives in Konami’s classic Contra. Then there were other cheats that took a little more skill and talent such as the 100 extra lives on the Original Super Mario Brothers on level 8-3 where clanking the two turtles on the final stairway into each other multiple times would result in up to 100 free lives.

Then came the next wave of cheats that were facilitated by additional hardware such as the Game Genie. These unique hardware adapters would change the code base of games on systems including NES, Genesis, GameBoy, SNES, Game Gear and could do far more than the simple manual codes gamers previously relied on. Whether it was facilitating gamer’s god complexes by giving them invincibility or make them invisible to enemies, Game Genie allowed gamers to fall back in love with their old favorites.

As a second coming of the hardware based approach to game cheats we were introduced to the Game Shark. This second coming is designed to not only help you find cheats within your games but also to back-up your games. Best of all there is a Game Shark fro virtually every system old and new.

For example, in the stage of the Temple of the Oracle, At the end of the bridge you’ll be thrown into a battle with a ton of those flying nuisances and a couple of gorgons, defeat them all to open up the blocked paths. There’s a scene here as well afterward, when it’s over climb the stairs and grab the chests on the left and right side of the temple entrance for a Gorgon Eye and a Phoenix Feather. Inside the actual temple run to the top end and grab the staties there, you can pull them out to reveal two chests, both multicoloured. These statues actually serve a purpose, you may have noticed by now that the swarm of harpies is literally unending, and for that reason you cannot continue any further (you’ll see why if you climb the stairs.) What you need to do is drag the left statues down and use it to block the left hole, then drag the right statue down and use it to block the right hole. Now take out any remaining harpies and voila, you’re free. Take the lower left gate next to yet another multicoloured chest and lift it up. Before going up the stairs jump up onto the ledge to your right, here you will find a chest with another Gorgon Eye. On the adjacent side there’s a chest full of red orbs. Now climb the stairs and begin to make your way across the ceiling beams Head left to find one at the end leading up that doesn’t collapse then follow along to the right until you find another one. Head up and jump off beside the save point here. Save your game and head left.

LEGO Batman Review For PSP

Posted on Oct 18, 2008 under Games Review, Play Station | No Comment

LEGO was part of my childhood, it was and still is an innovative toy. When you combine LEGO with Batman, the result is an extremely addictive game with so many features to keep you from turning off your PSP.

I have never played LEGO Star Wars but I’ve played LEGO Indiana Jones (demo). I think LEGO Indiana Jones is an average game, probably because I am not a huge fan of the series. On the other hand, I’ve always loved Batman series so its only naturally for me to love LEGO Batman as well.

Story and controls
The story is no brainer, all your well known villains are in this game including Penguin, Poison Ivy, Joker, Riddler, Clayface and Mr.Freeze are here terrorizing Gotham City. Your job obviously is to clean up the mess. The controls are very simple with jump, punch and switch between the two characters etc. Anyone will be able to figure out the controls almost immediately. Tips will show up when you are near key areas so most of the time you will know what to do and how to get to a particular area. Player friendly is one of the reasons why I think this game is worth the money. Auto aim also exists so that your character will punch whatever is breakable (if in range).

Game play and graphics
As I mentioned the controls are easy to get a hang on, this also makes the game play more enjoyable because you can actually PLAY the game instead of constantly trying to figure out what is what. I assume because the target audience is kids since its rated E for everyone. When you destroy objects, you will get LEGO pieces, those are actually your money that you can spend on upgrading your suits and other “toys”. This greatly increases the replay value of this game because of the unlockable and upgradable items. After the first chapter, you are given either to continue to next chapter or back to the Batcave. Instead of picking continue which will load the next chapter, you can save the game and enter your Batcave.

After finishing the first episode as Batman/Robin, you can then play as Riddler/Clayface by unlocking the option in the Batcave or you can choose to continue with the other two Batman episodes.

The Batcave is amazingly designed with detailed textures (when comparing to PS2 graphics) and the cave is really big separated by different areas. The main area will allow you to pick one of the 3 episodes using one of Batman’s vehicles which are made of LEGO. You can jump from episode to episode and don’t have to play them in order. You can also go back to the mansion and check your trophies from your accomplishments.

Aside from having detailed buildings, the characters all have detailed facial expressions as well which make the cut scenes so much more fun to watch (the cut scenes are hilarious by the way!).

Sound
The Batman themed music is pretty much from the Batman movies starred Michael Keaton (personally I think he was the best Batman) if not exactly the same. The music is so good that as I’m writing this review, its still in my head playing non stop. But I’m guessing I might get bored of it sooner or later.

How to Fix Your Xbox 360 3 Light Error

Posted on Oct 12, 2008 under Xbox 360 | No Comment

Fixing your Xbox 360 in under an hour is completely possible. I can be frustrating when you are in the middle of a heated Gear of War game when you get the three red rings of death.

Don’t panic as this is a fixable error. Once you know the secret to repairing it you can be back up and playing Gears within the hour.

One trick to getting your Xbox 360 back up and running is the towel trick. This is hit or miss as sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Basically you get a nice heavy towel and wrap your Xbox up in it. Now by wrapping your system up in this towel and turning it on it should overheat. Once it overheats it will reset itself and you should be able to play again. If, the Xbox does not reset itself from using the towel trick than you a couple other things.

You can look in the phone book for local shops that will fix your Xbox but that could cost anywhere from $100-$200 dollars just to get it back up and running. Another option is to send it into Microsoft and if it is still under warranty they will fix it for free and all you have to pay is the shipping and handling.

The final option to get your Xbox up and running quickly is to use one of the online Xbox repair guides. These can be found on different sites and can cost between $20-$50 dollars. Most all guides come with a video on how to fix the Xbox yourself. In a pinch this might be the best option to get up and running quickly.

Managing Video Game Addiction

Posted on Oct 11, 2008 under General Gaming Tips | No Comment

In modern societies, playing video games and computer games have provided individuals with a great form of escape, being drawn into a world that is entirely different from their own. These forms of games have caused a fad that seems to never fade. Thanks to the constant integration of modern computer technologies, these games continuously evolve, becoming more and more engaging and appealing to players. When we thought that these games have provided the society a great form of hobby or means of passing time, think again. Compulsive gaming and many other psychological problems have related computer and video games as a major factor of addiction. Fun and entertainment are the primary factors that cause addiction. While virtual games provided both, they managed to change the trend and appearance on addiction in the modern world.

Game addicts also manifest addictive behaviors, similar to those that are observed in substance abuse. If an individual tolerates long hours of gaming or becomes miserable and irritable when prevented from doing the activity, he is already affected by compulsive gaming disorder. In worse cases, addicts can become violent or depressed when they are denied of the opportunity to play. When an individual continues to play despite being aware of the adverse consequences that are brought by the activity, then the conditions may now be considered a full-blown addiction.

The disturbing fact about this form of modern-day addiction is that it does not concentrate on a specific age group. When a child is old enough to touch and understand the workings of a video game console, he is already at risk of being affected by this gaming disorder. The sneaky thing about video games is that many parents think of them as a harmless way of spending their kid’s free time. Behind the wholesome graphics, the easily attainable reward-system makes them more appealing and engaging to play, sometimes causing children to spend many hours in front of a game console. On the other hand, adult virtual games provide a great way of escape from the realities of the player’s actual life. Playing computer games or online games allow individuals to create and live a new personality in a virtually created world. To some extent, these games displace friends and families in filling a person’s social needs.

Until today, the diagnosis on video game addiction and computer game addiction is still debated and yet to be finalized. However, similar to those in substance abuse, computer game addiction and video game addiction manifests addictive behaviors as in tolerance of playing at an increasing length of time, constantly thinking about doing the activity, the feeling of the need to lie to cover up the growing dependence on gaming activities and the feeling of irritability and moodiness when prevented from playing virtual games.
